Last night we had our 27th monthly Surge. Time really does fly. We started Surge August 1st, 2008 and with the exception of one month (we chose not to do Surge one month to help support another event) we’ve done Surge the first Friday of every month since then. By my count that adds up to 27. It’s funny because next week my Lead Pastor (Rey Martinez) and I will be spending three days at the RightNow Conference with other leaders of young adults and it was there three years ago that the inspiration for Surge was birthed. When it comes to Hispanic young adults, your twenty and thirty-somethings, there’s really not anything like it. The vision for Surge simply piggy-backed on the vision of LeadNow/Fusion (what the event was formally called) and applied it specifically to Hispanic young adults. Inspire, Connect, and Activate. That’s exactly what we do. That’s why it’s so exciting to see 100+ Hispanic young adults on a Friday night, when they could be doing 101 other things, choosing to come together and worship, and then live out their faith. This group has so much passion and when you provide an opportunity to serve, the impact is enormous. Last night we had close to 150 in worship from all over Fort Worth and out of that group we had close to 100 that went downtown with Pastor Lano (Freedom in Worship) and walked the streets, talking to, praying with, people living on the streets. We also passed out blankets and coats that were donated by the people that attend Surge. Last month we had people bring socks and underwear, and we had 103 people take the shoes off of their feet and give them away. It’s amazing to see that when you give people an opportunity to serve, incredible things happen. Watch this short video from Pastor Lano last night talking about what it all meant.
